Assignment 4-The Jilting of Granny Weatherall

Yellow Book p. 1035  This is a replacement for a lecture during Holocaust Week.
In the story you are about to read, Granny Weatherall is unable to shake the memory of an event that occurred 60 years earlier.  Think about memories that replay again and again in your mind.  Which of these do you recall so vividly that you can almost relive the moments?  1. Write a paragraph about it.

2. What does jilted mean?  Have you ever been jilted?  Write a paragraph about it.
Read the story.
3. This story is not written in chronological order.  It is being told by Granny who is ill and old.  Her mind  slips in and out of the present time and moves by association rather than chronological.  What leads Granny to think that she has been jilted?
4.  Explain the irony of Granny's response to the imminence of death.
5.  What is the theme of the story based on evidence from the last paragraph of the story.

Assignment 6-The Pledge of Allegiance

I struggle with students each year to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.  It was easier when I was married.  My husband was a Viet Nam veteran and had been a POW.  He was always at the school helping with yearbook activities and my students loved and respected him. He was plague with medical problems --all from the war.

Here's another students story about the pledge.
